Seeing Color – Eyes and Art

Viendo Color -Ojos y arte

 

AN ELEMENTARY INTRODUCTION TO VISION AND HOW YOUR EYES CAN BE FOOLED, PLUS ONE ARTIST’S EXPERIMENTS IN COLOR

 

This STEAM lesson has includes both science and art activities. To complete both takes about 2 hours.

MATERIALS (Details in Teacher Notes linked below)

Activity 1 – Make an Image

  1. Magnifying glass or similar lens 

Activity 2 – Blind Spot 

  1. Drawing from Observation Sheet (linked below)  

Activity 3 – Rods or Cones?

  1. A few colored crayons or pencils 

Activity 4 – Do My Shoes Match?

  1. Pieces of felt or colored paper of dark, similar shades, for example, black, brown, purple, navy blue

  2. A deep box or carton (to block room light). You can also just turn off all the lights if the room is dark enough.

Activity 5 – What Color?

  1. Bright primary colored small candies

  2. Source of colored light (LED  finger lights or key chain light or flashlight with a thin balloon as a color filter)

Activity 6 – Presto Change-o!

  1. Red paper circle with a black dot in the center

  2. One black paper background

  3. One white paper background
