MAKING WAVES – THE COLORS OF LIGHT

ARE ALL RED LIGHTS THE SAME COLOR? BUILD A SPECTROSCOPE FROM A CARDBOARD TUBE AND AN OLD CD AND STUDY THE COLORS IN THE LIGHTS AROUND YOU.

 

MATERIALS (Details in teacher notes below)

Activity 1 – Make a Rainbow

  1. Flashlight – the old fashioned kind with a single incandescent bulb or single LED bulb, Recordable CD with coating removed 

Activity 2 – Making Waves

  1. Rope or Slinky® (spring) toy, Meter stick

Activity 3 – Make a Spectroscope

  1. Cardboard tube 15-20 cm long (like a toilet paper tube), Piece of CD, Square of aluminum foil, Craft knife or pencil to make a slit or hole in the foil, Tape, Rubber band 

Activities 4-5 – Studying Spectra 

  1. Same as Activity 3 plus assorted sources of light.
